Technology: the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry

Design and Technology is about providing opportunities for our pupils to develop their capability, combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to create quality products.


At Bollin Primary School we want Design & Technology to be an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject for all our pupils to enjoy and be motivated by. Using creativity and imagination we want our pupils to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Through effective delivery of Design and Technology lessons our pupils shall acquire a broad subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art to help develop their skills further. 


Pupils will learn how to take risks and become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality Design and Technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation and we want all pupils at Bollin Primary School to recognise its importance within the modern world in which we live.

The Design Technology Curriculum sets out to ensure that all pupils: 

 

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise that is needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world 
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users 
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others 
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
  • will develop a deep understanding of the concepts that run within Primary Design and Technology learning and establish clear connections to learning within other disciplines in school.

  • Decisions:     freedom to make their own design decisions

In Key Stage 1 children are taught about:

 

  • design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users 
  • generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas 
  • select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks 
  • select from and use a wide range of materials and components 
  • explore and evaluate a range of existing products 
  • evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria
  • build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable 
  • explore and use mechanisms 

 

In Key Stage 2 children are taught about:

 

  • design purposeful, functional, appealing products 
  • use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products
  • generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas 
  • investigate and analyse a range of existing products
  • select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks 
  • select from and use a wide range of materials and components 
  • evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria 
  • understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world 
  • understand and use mechanical systems in their products
  • understand and use electrical systems in their products 
  • apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products.
