Section 1: Our Reading Vision
It is our vision that EVERY child leaves Year 6 as a skilled, motivated reader and sees themselves as a reader. They recognise the value and purpose of reading, not only for learning, but have also discovered the pleasure of being ‘lost in a book’.
Our leaders, teachers and teaching assistants all recognise the importance of reading and we are committed to enabling EVERY child to become a successful reader by the time they leave Year 6.
Section 2: Importance of Reading
Reading is the MASTER SKILL of the curriculum, it is the key skill that underpins all subjects.
For a child to succeed at school and within our education system they need to be a strong reader. But reading offers so much more … it’s an experience, it has positive impact on our well-being. It nurtures the soul and can take you on new adventures and enter new worlds.
Studies have shown that:
- those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations and associated with better sleeping patterns.
- reading for pleasure is more important for children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background.
- reading extensively and for pleasure can foster the development of stronger reading habits and increase literacy skills at a greater rate than through formal literacy lessons.
Section 3: Our Approach
Our approach to teaching reading has six interwoven elements:
At the heart of our approach to teaching reading are our highly skilled teaching staff who confidently and effectively TEACH, MODEL and SCAFFOLD. Teachers make visible the skills of reading, explicitly teaching children why, what and how to read.
Reading is embedded within the provision in every classroom and children actively engage with texts, throughout the day, for a wide range of different purposes.
